Q: Some people think studying in a university is worthwhile only because you can get a degree. Do you? agree or disagree with the statement? Give specific reasons to support your answer.
I think that we can achieve more than just a degree for being a university student. We also gain other benefits which are unlikely obtained if we don’t enroll in a university. I will explain those benefits in the following.
First, we may practice self-learning in university. In elementary until high school, we are fully guided by teachers. They are explaining the course and students have to pay attention. But in university, lecturers just give the concept and basic materials. After that, students have to explore those by themselves, especially if they want to specialize in a specific area and do their thesis. So, reasons for learning come up from themselves, not just from curriculum’s demand.
Second, we can obtain advanced specific skills for being a university student. The school just teaches us general knowledge, despite the fact that we are rather choosing a specific area in high school. Maybe we can really pick a specific area if we enroll in vocational’s one. But, we know that university will give us more advanced knowledge and skills. Specific advanced skills are important if we pursue careers professionally.
Third, for some people, especially the people who just graduated from high school, being university students can help them in their transition of their life. They should change their behavior from being adolescents to being adults. Some people would face some difficulties, for example, if they are just receiving the money for their studies, but suddenly forced to work for their own needs. Another example, if they are just learning stuff from books and schools, they would be shocked by how reality works. In my opinion, university is one of the most appropriate places for spending this phase of life because we are doing both adolescents and adults roles: “studying” and “striving for life”.
